You Already Knew

Remind me what you said Just before the sky broke.  New white sandals, Cuffed shorts Embroidered and hemmed  Just above the knee Every inch exploring Braids twisted in hope, Nothing is missing, But everything is gone.  Unwinding. I speak… listen. I fly… walk. I move… still. But, you already knew. In the park, children playing Through the haze, sunbeams swaying Trees whisper their ancient lore And the world turns, evermore In each face, a story to find In each heart, a piece of time Unwinding. I speak… listen. I fly… walk. I move… still. But, you already knew. Unwinding. I speak… listen. I fly… walk. I move… still. But, you already knew. Remind me what you said, just before the sky broke. A Child Set Free

Shine the stars down, Fall the soft rain down. Shine the stars down, Fall the soft rain down. Through the dark,  spirit songs. Finding Hope  that we belong. Oh, glorious story,  unfolding, unfurling, In the beginning, when now as ever, a child set free.  Through the dark,  spirit songs, Finding Hope  that we belong. Oh, glorious story,  unfolding, unfurling, In the beginning, when now as ever, a child set free.  Shine the stars down, Fall the soft rain down. Fragile Lace

Storm churning Fever burning, Head aches, Wide awake.  Stop, fall, pound, twitch,  flush, blush, shudder.  Cold sweat chills,  the fire’s climbing (I’m unwinding.) Climbing higher still. (It’s the fire still.) Sun streams in,  Lifts dust like smoke. Gentle strokes, fragile lace, head to hip,  Sin erased, to leisure days.  Sun streams in,  Lifts dust like smoke. Gentle strokes, fragile lace, head to hip,  Sin erased.  Twigs snap, cans fall.  Nothing stays still. Softness comes to rest,  It’s not a test,  Baby, hush now.  (Hush. Hush.) There’s peace now.  (Only peace.) Stop, fall, pound, twitch,  flush, blush, shudder.  Cold sweat chills,  the fire’s climbing (I’m unwinding.) Climbing higher still. (It’s the fire still.) Winds die down.  Rest now. (No sound around) Baby, hush now.  (Just hush.) There’s peace now.  (Only peace.) (C) 2024 BMI.

Six Years Old

The first time I broke I was 6 years old and my aunt told me My daddy was gone. I brought him cards I looked outside too, I checked his room, But, daddy I couldn’t  Find you.     Before you left, did grandpa say: “I will take care of them for the rest of my days?” Before you left, Did grandpa say: “I give you my word,  it will be okay?” “You have permission  to fall away.”   The next time I broke, 5 weeks had gone by And mama told me that  Good men die. Grandpa was so strong, It was just a test. Then one dose,  two dose, cardiac arrest. I didn’t bring him cards I didn’t check his room, Because grandpa  It was just too soon. The first time  I broke in half I was 6 years old and… And my innocence was gone. Oh my innocence was gone. God my innocence was gone.   My innocence was gone. Oh my innocence was gone. (C) 2024 BMI

In the Middle of My Memory of You

An oriel lands softly on a branch just out of view.  You play a game of  Hide and seek (OR    …. is it Peek-a-boo?) I spy orange stripes, black feathers against sky blue. Pain catches us in the middle of things, in the middle of my memory of you.  Has it been that long since we talked, Gathered pine cones  in the park? Since we held eachother,  and morning  chased away the dark? I spy orange stripes, black feathers against sky blue. Pain catches us in the middle of things, in the middle of my memory of you.  I still sense you near (Oh, those memories of you) Turn around and you’re not there (yes, those memories of you) Had to be so hot and cold? (It’s those memories of you) My heart was bought and sold.   (oh those memories of you). An oriel lands softly on a branch just out of view.  You play a game of  Hide and seek OR    …. is it Peek-a-boo? Seem to think it’s win or lose, but it’s not up to you.  I spy orange stripes, black feathers against sky blue. Pain catches us in the middle
